Final Fantasy Compressed Grant Wise Chapter I History of Spira Disclaimer: All characters from the Final Fantasy series are owned by Square-Enix. Squall sat down in the chair that had been specifically built for him according to Headmaster Cida^€™s instructions. He began working on menial paperwork, which seemed to be a large part of his job now. After killing Ultimecia and putting an end to the Sorceress threat SeeD was now just a mercenary service, however now that NORG was dead SeeD was no longer obligated to do things that Headmaster Cid saw as wrong just for money. This meant that SeeDa^€™s were no longer sent out to assist in acts of terrorism or invasion. Now SeeDs were only deployed for defense or occasional guarding duties. It seemed like years since Squall had been on a dangerous mission. He killed Ultimecia at the age of seventeen, and he was now twenty-two. The money he was awarded from SeeD and the Esther government had made him a very wealthy man. He stayed at SeeD only because he did not know what he would do with himself without his job. Unfortunately his job no longer had any thrill left in it, Garden was becoming less and less of a military organization and more and more like a College. Squall had been walking through the halls a few days earlier and noticed a poster up on a wall. "Earn an education, and see the world! Balamb Garden!" Due to the efforts of his former instructor Quistis Trepe and Headmaster Cid Kramer, Balamb Garden was expanded and changed from a High School into a College as well. Instead of the former rate of about ten people becoming SeeDs per year, it had dwindled to about two people a year. There was even some discussion about disbanding SeeD entirely and devoting Garden to being only a school, but Squall quickly voiced his opposition to it and the issue was short-lived. Luckily Squall was still regarded as an influential leader, and because he exercised his authority rarely it was considered all the more important when he did. Squall had now taken the role NORG had left behind. Garden Master Leonhart, second in command only to Headmaster Cid, and even then Squall could challenge his authority. Squall dare not try to challenge Cid, because if he did it would create another small war within Garden. Even though it was only a rumor, there was some talk of a group of SeeDa^€™s and students who wanted to replace Cid with Squall and restore SeeD as a significant military force in the world. Squall had become more accustomed to authority, but he still did not want that much power. He still has a brief laugh whenever he thinks of his humble beginnings as Rinoaa^€™s pity soldier. As Garden Master, Squall did do a few significant things. He created a council of SeeDa^€™s to act as a cabinet. Quistis was in charge of the students and testing, Selphie was placed in charge of magical research(which Squall specified did not include her doing any actual research), Xu was placed to help make important decisions(and Squall kept her as a precaution to avoid trying to turn Garden away from Cida^€™s original ideals), and because of persistent comments Zell had been made the official Director of Food and Drink. Sadly enough Zell had become the cabineta^€™s most productive member, there had not been one hot dog shortage since he was put in charge. Squalla^€™s second most notable accomplishment would probably be the purchasing of certain unused land from the weakened Galbadian government and the thriving Esther government to be used as a^€~portsa^€™ where Garden can land for repairs and refueling. Alas, Squall was still unhappy. He wanted more excitement, and was becoming increasingly depressed each day that the man who killed one of the greatest threats ever known to the world was now wasting away at a desk job. Squall was even more unhappy when he and Rinoa began to drift apart. Rinoa left Garden just two weeks after her nineteenth birthday and was made the Governor of Timber. Under her rule Timber prospered and increased in size, and it has been made perfectly clear to Galbadia that any military action against Timber will result in a full-scale attack from SeeD and the Esther army. At first Squall and Rinoa tried to keep in contact, but Rinoa was swept up in her duties and Squall was swept up in his. Squall saw her on television not too long ago, and she was much different. The wave of responsibilities she now faced was a sort of wake-up call for her. The day she became a Governor was the day she became an adult; her free spirit wasna^€™t dead, but it was definitely wounded. Politically the world was unstable. Galbadiaa^€™s new president, President Julian Renion, believed strongly that the world belongs to Galbadia. He often points out that Esther supports the tiny territory of Timber, and that it is under the command of a Sorceress. He rallies support by saying Esther is going to make Rinoa their new leader and reestablish a Sorceress as the dictator of their nation. Esther on the other hand is trying to remain peaceful, but is also using its powerful military against Galbadia whenever it tries to invade a territory. Squall pondered all of these different things in his mind and then leaned back in his chair. "Things sure are different," Squall muttered to himself. "Garden Master Leonhart! Please report to the bridge!" rang Nidaa^€™s voice threw the speakers in Squalla^€™s office. Squall stood up and tossed on his jacket. He quickly made his way to the bridge and was somewhat surprised at who he saw there. Four White SeeDs stood with their hands behind their back. Over the last few years all Gardens and SeeDa^€™s were placed under a central authority, meaning Squall had authority even over these men. "At ease!" Squall declared while one of the SeeDa^€™s stepped forward. The SeeD cleared his throat and nodded at the Gardena^€™s pilot. Squall immediately realized that whatever message they have for him must be important and classified, which meant Nida was unauthorized to hear it. Squall tapped Nida on the shoulder and dismissed him and then turned his attention back to the White SeeDs. "I am Lieutenant Krueger, and Ia^€™ve been sent to you personally from Edea." "Edea..." Squall said with slight surprise that he would have a message from his Matron. "It appears that when you and your five companions allowed Ultimecia to begin the process of Time Compression it had unexpected effects. Apparently killing Ultimecia was not enough to end the process, we should have done more... preparations." "What are you saying... ?" "Well Time Compression is complicated when it works, but now that an incomplete Time Compression has taken place... well. Perhaps this would be the best way to illustrate my point. Matron thought it would be." The SeeD finished speaking and then obtained a piece of paper from one of his companions. He handed the paper to Squall who looked over it with a look of confusion. "That, sir, is my birth certificate." "I dona^€™t understand... you were born three years ago?" Squall looked at the man who appeared to be at least seventeen. "Like I said, the Time Compression is having undesired effects. It may interest you to know that I just returned from Ultimeciaa^€™s castle and was given a few things of hers that Matron wanted me to show to you." Squall had too many questions racing through his head, so he figured he would simply look at what the man has in his hand. It was a diary with the words Arylas Gaimboro written in gold on the red cover. Squall looked up at the man who had handed him the book with a puzzled look on his face. "We have not confirmed anything yet, but some clues have led us to believe that Ultimecia was a title and not her name. We have found some other texts in her castle that lead us to believe that Ultimecia actually means "Sorceress of Time," or more literally "Time Witch." Arylas Gaimboro is assumed to be Ultimeciaa^€™s real name. Squall opened up to a random page near the beginning of the diary and began reading silently to himself. How they all hate me, oh they all seek me dead! "Ultimecia! Ultimecia is coming! We must kill her before she kills us!" They have no concept of who or what I am! I am the innocent girl, a mere teenager in their eyes. Oh if they knew of my secrets, oh if they knew what I know. Ita^€™s sort of sad really, to know the prophecies concerning your own life and death. But I know other things too! After all, I am the a^€~Time Witch.a^€™ I know of this planets past, of all the things that have been forgotten or in some cases blotted out. I know of the time when this planet was called Spira, and the age of Yu Yevon. I know of it all! And Ia^€™ve written it all down, as a present for my future adversary. If any man kills me then he deserves to know what I know. Squall closed the book and looked back up. Squall was suddenly realizing that Ultimecia was at one time human, before she became that horrible creature he had to face. If he were he not a SeeD it might have hit him harder, but he had killed many people in his short lifetime. "She knew you were coming for her. You may keep the journal, we have made copies, but I advise you to read it. If nothing else it should be entertaining. We have also found a book she wrote concerning the history of the world, but we are not yet at liberty to give that to you. We are still reading and copying it. Although, it was written specifically for you." "What do you mean?" Squall said with intrigue in his voice. The White SeeD began thumbing through the pages in the Sorceressa^€™s diary. He stopped and handed the diary back to Squall and he began reading again. They say that no matter what Ultimecia does she will be killed. "From a seed in a garden shall grow a lion! A hero with no desire for fame shall kill the one who seeks immortality." I have studied a great deal and I believe I know the one who was destined to kill me. There was a man many years ago named Seifer Almasy who was a promising SeeD, and it is those same SeeDs who hunt me today. To you Seifer, I leave the history of the world! Next Entry Almasy was not the one, he does not fulfill the prophecy. He was not humble, he was a proud man who sought after fame. He shall not kill me. Ia^€™ve found another man though. I found my way onto the old Garden databases. Squall Leonhart, an introvert, a SeeD from Balamb Garden, and his name refers to lions. To you, if you can kill me, the history of the world is yours! Squall found journal interesting, but not particularly alarming. The fact that he was speaking with a fully grown man who should be only three years old was what had scared him. He stood up and saluted the White SeeD and then made his way back to his quarters. He had a small smirk on his face the whole way back. "At least things are going to get a little bit more interesting now." ----- Squall contacted Zell, Selphie, Quistis, and Irvine, and told them the news he had just received. They all seemed surprised by the news, and they all felt as though they had failed in some way. They were responsible for trying to use Time Compression to get to Ultimecia, if ita^€™s causing time to unravel in some way ita^€™s their responsibility. Obviously no experiments have ever been performed to see what kind of effect Time Compression would have on the world, let alone a failed Time Compression. "Well...whata^€™s going to happen?" Zell blurted out breaking the silence. "We dona^€™t really know now do we!" Quistis snapped, obviously feeling guilty. "Quissy, calm down. Making Zell cry wona^€™t help anyone!" Selphie said in her usual upbeat manner, which didna^€™t help sooth Quistisa^€™s nerves much. Irvine then leaned over to Selphie and whispered something in her ear. A huge grin grew across Selphiea^€™s face and she turned to face the rest of her friends. "I think I know what we all should do!" Zell looked at the ground for a second then he jumped up with a smile. "Do you mean... ?" "Yeah!" "Well, all right!" Zell exclaimed. Suddenly Squall and Quistis felt left behind. They both looked at each other and then looked at a grinning Selphie. "What are you guys thinking about?" Squall finally inquired. "Ragnarok!" Selphie yelled out as Irvine covered her mouth suddenly. "Dona^€™t forget, Ragnarok officially crashed. Thata^€™s how it stays out little secret." Irvine smiled at Selphie as she turned back to Squall. "Well, can we?" Squall sighed, "I dona^€™t know, I have a lot of work to do. If you guys want to go ahead thata^€™s fine." "Ah come on, it wona^€™t be any fun without you!" Selphie persisted as Irvine suddenly butt in to the conversation. "Dona^€™t worry Selphie, wea^€™ll find a way to have fun. Leta^€™s let Squall take care of what he needs to take care of." Irvine said nonchalantly, but with an urged look on his face. "I promise, wea^€™ll do something eventually." Squall said with a slight smile and a pat on Selphiea^€™s shoulder. She decided to leave it at that. Selphie, Quistis, Zell, and Irvine all crowded into Irvinea^€™s car and drove off of Garden and toward Ragnaroka^€™s hiding place in Esther. After they had left Squall issued a command to Nida to fly Garden to Timber and then to return to Esther to wait for Selphie and the others. Squall knew that he needed to tell Rinoa that their troubles may not be over. He felt sort of anxious about seeing her again after so long with no contact. ----- Selphie felt good piloting the Ragnarok again, soaring through the air at dangerous speeds with no experience. If Selphie did have experience flying then it wouldna^€™t be as much fun to fly with her, the last minute twists and turns sort of the ride fun. As they were circling their planet they noticed something strange on the Centra continent. They landed to get a closer look at what it was and were dumbfounded. It appeared that a section of Centra had been ripped away and they were peering into a whole new world altogether. They suddenly noticed that the thing they were viewing began to grow a little bit. At first it appeared like a fluid and now it began to appear more solid. Whatever they were looking at seemed to be in the middle of a busy city. Zell walked forward and saw a man in a brown suit walking past, and formulated an idea. Just before the man disappeared from view he swung at the man. He fell backwards and then looked around confused, indicating that he could not see Zell. The man promptly stood back up and ran off, and the four SeeDs looked at each other with confusion. "I suddenly just became very interested in Ultimeciaa^€™s account of the history of this planet." Quistis announced as she examined the slowly growing second world. "I think we need to go see Matron." ----- Squall was waiting in his car when he felt Garden slow to a stop near Timber. He drove out of the Garden parking lot and down the ramp that had been built, and toward the Timber City. He soon found himself in front of Heartily Tower, affectionately named for the first governor of Timber. Squall entered the building and noticed a metal detector at the door. A guard was there who nodded to a bin for all his metal items. Squall parted with his Lion Heart and any other items that would set off the metal detector, and then was allowed access up to the fifth floor. He took the elevator up to the fifth floor, where he saw a man in full Timber Armor. Some time before Timber earned ita^€™s independence and member of the terrorist organization Forest Snakes had developed a brand of armor reinforced with mythril. Said to be the strongest armor developed in the last two centuries, Rinoa ordered that it be researched and then produced in mass. It was too expensive to freely distribute, so it was given to high-ranking military officers only. "State your business!" said the fully armored man as he subtly placed his hand on his gun. "I need to speak with Governor Heartily quickly, tell her ita^€™s Squall Leonhart." "Ia^€™m afraid that wona^€™t be possible. Please move along, sir." "You dona^€™t understand, I need to speak with her. I am the Garden Master of Balamb Garden, I know Rinoa personally. If you tell her who I-" "Move along, sir!" "Damn..." Squall mumbled to himself as he walked back into the elevator and descended back down to the first floor. He retrieved his Gunblade and began walking out of the building when he bumped into three men charging into the building. They were all cloaked in long coats and wide-brimmed hats. Squall knew something was wrong, but before he could do anything a man killed the guard at the door. "What are you doing here?" Squall demanded as he readied his Lion Heart for a fight. "Damn it! You two get the governor, Ia^€™ll take him!" said the man who appeared to be the leader. Squall took a battle stance and the man he was fighting suddenly pulled out a black-bladed Gunblade. Squall noticed the unique battle stance his opponent took and was struck with disbelief. Squall noticed a slight smirk on the face of his enemy, although he could not see his eyes he knew who it was. "Squall..." growled the man as he stared Squall down. "... Seifer." Seifer charged first, and he and Squall clashed blades. Squall waved his hand while casting an Aero spell, causing a burst of wind to shoot from his hand and blow Seifera^€™s hat away. Seifer laughed and swung his Gunblade at Squall, who ducked at the last minute. Squall took this opportunity for a counter attack, which Seifer managed to still block. "Come on Squall, save the woman you love!" Seifer taunted as he swung again with greater speed. Squall used his Lion Heart to stop Seifera^€™s blade, but then pulled the trigger which caused a bullet to hit Seifera^€™s blade and the force of the bullet pushed his blade away. Seifer laughed as he jumped back and glared at an increasingly furious Squall. Suddenly Squall felt the temperature all around him begin to heat up, and knew what was coming. Squall started to race forward as he felt his entire body become enveloped in flames. Squall flew backward in intense pain as he tried to regain himself so as to not fall victim to another of Seifera^€™s tricks which earned him the scar on his face. Seifer charged forward with his Gunblade up in the air prepared for a deathblow. Squall quickly evaluated his options, and acted as though his injuries were worse then they were. As Seifer was about to swing his weapon at his injured rival, Squall suddenly thrust the blade of his Lion Heart upward at Seifera^€™s abdomen. Seifer had jumped back, but was still cut by the tip of Squalla^€™s sword. Seifer gasped and looked down at his bleeding abdomen and then looked back at Squall who was picking himself up off the floor. A smile crept over Seifera^€™s face as he looked at the blood on his fingers. "This is why I love fighting you, you are just always full of surprises!" Squall and Seifer both clashed blades again, when the sound of gunfire echoed through the building. Squall was worried about Rinoa, but refused to allow his worries to get in the way of the task at hand. If Seifer died then the other two, who Squall expected to be Fujin and Raijin, would not last very long. ----- Selphie, Zell, Quistis, and Irvine all piled into the Ragnarok and Selphie flew them to Edeaa^€™s orphanage. Since being defeated, Edea reopened her orphanage and unfortunately there were many to be taken care of. Quistis went to Edeaa^€™s bedroom where she was reading to a young girl. Quistis patiently let Edea finish, while her friends went to go speak with Cid. Edea finished reading and then told the girl to go play with her friends. Edea stood up and signaled for Quistis to come in. Quistis smiled and entered and gave Edea a hug and they both sat down on the bed. "What brings you back to the Orphanage, Quistis." Edea said with some concern in her voice. "Squall told us about the complicationa^€™s that are arising from the failed Time Compression. We decided to board Ragnarok to fly around a little bit and clear our nerves, when..." "Yes, go on." "Well Ia^€™m not sure how to describe it. It was like we could see a glimpse of another world within our own." The color seemed to immediately leave Edeaa^€™s face and she stared at the floor. She took a deep breath and then turned back to Quistis. "Ia^€™m afraid I know what it is that you saw." "What is it, Matron?" Quistis said with a mixture of intrigue and concern in her voice. "I dona^€™t think we stopped Time Compression, we simply slowed it down." Edea said with a guilty voice. Edea stood up and retrieved some papers from a printer in her room. She and Quistis both put on their reading glasses and began reading. "This is a portion of Ultimeciaa^€™s book, I think it would be wise to read it now." Our world started out as a planet called Spira, before we renamed it Earth. One of the dominant tribes were the Cetra who migrated from land to land using the energy of the planet in the form of the "Lifestream." Over time the Cetra began to abandon their nomadic exist and settle down in different areas. These Cetra gave up their abilities to wield the power of the Lifestream, and thus they began to lose their stability of form. They all experienced changes in different degrees, often their transformations were influenced by geography. From this came the Ronsos and the Guados. Cetra would appear to many today as simply large humans, but the Ronsos were not at all human and the Guados would be best described as humanoid. Soon the Human race was born, and consequently the Al Bhed tribe of Humans who would later do much to shape Spiraa^€™s future. While the Ronsos and Guados fought bitter wars against each other, the Humans and Al Bhed were advancing their civilization through Machina, the predecessors to modern-day machines. Soon two great cities were constructed, Zanarkand and Bevelle. The Guados and the Ronsos formed a truce and went off to form their respective civilizations in peace. The Al Bhed were developing their Machina skills, but were going at a much slower rate than the Humans. Soon four new races sprouted up from the remaining Cetra: the Hypello, the Moogles, the Shumis (along with the Shumia^€™s came their advanced form of Moombas), and the Tonberrys. The Hypello were not the most creative race, but they could learn easily which led them to enter the Humans world as engineers. The Moogles hid themselves in caves and were content to eat, sleep, and mate; I believe they had no knowledge of speech until many years later. The Shumis dug deep into the ground, rarely coming up until they developed into Moomba. And the Tonberrys took an interesting route, living seemingly only for the purpose of killing other races as though they were common beasts and fiends. The remaining Cetra were few in number, but there were few threats they had to face from other races. Life continued peacefully on the planet for three hundred years, until the planet experienced ita^€™s first Lunar Cry. The beasts fell from the moon to Spira and carried along with them a meteor, all of which landed on the snowy Northern Continent where the Cetra had migrated. The Cetra fought off the beasts, causing them to migrate to other continents to bother other races. The meteor, however, contained a horrible creature named Jenova, who had great strength and the ability to change its form. It saw the powerful Cetra and was afraid, so it changed itself into a virus which caused the Cetra to go mad. Over the next decade nearly all of the Cetra had died off, and few that remained had managed to seal Jenova back into her meteor and seal it up in a crater. The last Cetra gradually just became parts of other civilizations, and they were forgotten. Unfortunately the beasts from the moon, or fiends as they had been called, plagued the other races. Ronsos blamed Guados, and vice versa. While the citizens of Bevelle blamed Zanarkand and vice versa. This caused a war to break out between Zanarkand and Bevelle, a bloody war that threatened to destroy the planet. Near the end of the war it appeared Zanarkand was going to be destroyed, and ita^€™s ruler Lord Yevon was panicking. He discovered a Cetra in Zanarkand and questioned him to see if he could think of anything. The Cetra told Yevon that there may be a way to use the Lifestream to create a creature capable of destroying Bevelle. Yevon pondered this concept and thought that he had developed a better answer. He used Machina to gain access to the Lifestream and used its power to create a powerful Aeon that he named Sin. Rather than send it after Bevelle he used it to destroy Zanarkand and had his daughter Yunaleska to popularize a myth that Yevon was a god of sorts. He wanted to make fools of Bevelle, tricking them into worshiping him and even making a sacred prayer out of a common good luck sign used in a sport called Blitzball. Bevelle took to Yevonism quickly and easily, and forced it upon the Ronso and Guado as well. Yevon wanted to make the people suffer, so he told them that Machina had angered him and thata^€™s why Sin was born. Machina was outlawed in all civilizations, except for the Al Bhed who wanted to keep their Machina and rejected Yevonism. This attracted disdain for the Al Bhed, and made them into outcasts. Yevon continued to draw power from the Lifestream and used it to create more Aeons. What Yevon was unaware of was that the Lifestream was composed of the souls of the Cetra, this meant that for every Aeon that was made a Fayth would be made as a byproduct. The Fayth hated Yevon and wanted him destroyed, but Bevelle simply covered it over with lies and made the Aeons the key to defeating Sin. Yevon knew that Sin was too powerful to be killed by the Aeons he had made, so he had to find a way of killing Sin to prove that Yevonism worked and a way to bring Sin back in order to keep people worshiping him. He found that by sacrificing two people he could allow the summoning of an Aeon powerful enough to kill Sin, by creating a new Sin. The Summoner could sacrifice themselves and a Guardian to create a creature that can kill Sin, but that will then hibernate for ten years to create a new Sin. Everything was now going according to plan for Yevon, until it became time for a young Summoner named Yuna to attempt the Final Summoning. She accidently discovered that Yevonism was a complete fraud, and she set out to end the barbaric practice of the Final Summoning. She sent Yevona^€™s daughtera^€™s soul deep into the Earth and back into the Lifestream, hence destroying the Fayth for the Final Summoning. She then proceeded to fight Sin and kill the man who was slowly becoming the next Sin. Finally she was confronted by Yu Yevon himself, and she killed him as well. The removal of Yevonism opened up the floodgates for Machina to become popular again. In order to keep everyone comfortable with progress the Al Bhed renamed the Machina and started calling them Machines. One Al Bhed arose from this whose name was Shinra. He spent some time with Yuna and as a result had the opportunity to study the Farplane, which was the place deep inside the Earth where souls formed the Lifestream. He discovered that there was an unknown energy in the Farplane which could be harvested and used. After leaving Yuna he began a small company harvesting the energy. The company was called ShinRa Corporation. Yunaa^€™s dream was to rebuild a great city of lights like Zanarkand once was. Once ShinRa Corporations "Mako" energy became popular they began work on Midgar City in honor of Yuna. Unfortunately they did not realize that Mako energy was actually the Lifestream itself and the souls of the dead. After Shinraa^€™s death the corporation passed hands to greedier descendants. Safety was no longer a concern, neither were ethics. ShinRa Corporation built an army to protect their reactors, as some reactors were exploding and having harmful effects on those living near them. The Ronso and Guado became engaged in another war, which was easily won by the Ronso who exterminated the last of the Guado. The Ronso died off shortly after from two exploding reactors which either directly killed them or created a disease which finished them off. The Al Bhed were now too powerful to discriminate against, and Humanity was united once again. For a time society flourished. Quistis was furious that there was no more information, but was also very interested in what she heard. Information about history was limited, although she did remember learning about ShinRa Corporation and the negative effects it was having on the planet. Edea handed her the papers and they both stood up. "Thank you, Matron. Ia^€™m sure this is going to help us tremendously!" Quistis said to Edea while emphasizing her appreciation. "I thought you should learn the history of the world, because past and present are about to get much closer." ----- Squall and Seifer continued their fight with the sound of gunshots just a few floors above. Squall and Seifer locked blades, and Squall took the opportunity to kick Seifer to the ground. Seifer looked around and then thought up a plan. He used his Firaga spell to spew more fire, only instead of targeting Squall he set the building on fire. "This creates a whole new degree of difficulty, doesna^€™t it Squall?" Squall prepared to attack Seifer when he heard a loud scream coming from what sounded like the fifth floor. Suddenly a powerful gust of wind shot through the ceiling allowing Seifera^€™s allies to jump down to the first floor. Rinoa was struggling to get free from Raijina^€™s grip, but was easily over powered. Squall tried to cut Raijin down, but was hit in the head by Seifer. Squall turned to attack Seifer, giving Raijin a chance to escape. Once Raijin and Fujin were out of the building Seifer dashed out of the building, flinging more of his fire at Squall to create a diversion. Squall was furious, but knew there was little he could do. He stumbled out of the building and began to make his way back to his car. All the while he was wondering what Seifer would want with Rinoa. Add to Digg |
