A victim of Sephiroth's cruelty, her only crime was attempting to protect the planet from destruction. Aeris was slain as she prayed for Holy, in an attempt to prevent Sephiroth from using the black materia. It is her death that has left Cloud guilt-ridden and hesitant. Though she has returned to the planet, there are those among the living who can still feel her presence.
In Aeris' final act of kindness, she creates a healing rain that falls upon the cities of Midgar and Edge, curing those afflicted with Geostigma. She also takes pity upon Kadaj as he lies dying, offering the acceptance and love of a mother that he had persued so relentlessly in life.
