Shalua is a soldier and scientist working for the WRO. Through the course of many battles, she has lost not only her left eye, but several of her internal organs have been replaced with biomechemical parts. Her prostetic arm serves as her life support system. Prior to joining the WRO, she spent much of her life searching for something she had lost. Shalua is also the person who created Barret's gunarm.
When Vincent first met Shalua in Edge, she told him that she was seraching for her "reason to live"... Her reason to live turned out to be her younger sister, Shelke, who had been taken by Shinra when she was ten years old because they thought she had "potential". Shalua spent years searching for her and never gave up, even though many, including Reeve Tuesti, told her that it was likely hopeless.
When Shalua was finally reunited with Shelke, she learned that her younger sister was made part of the Deepground program. Now a Tsviet, Shelke is little like the child Shalua remembers. Deeply saddened by what she had allowed to happen to Shelke, and guilt-ridden for not being able to save her sooner, Shalua aided Shelke in escaping from Deepground when they decided that she was more of a liability than an asset.
Sacrificing herself when Azul attacked, Shalua saved Shelke's life. Though Shalua was later recovered by the WRO and taken to the medical facilities aboard the Shera, she had suffered so much trauma that there was little hope that she would ever regain consciousness.
When Shelke was later kidnapped by Nero, Shalua's spirit came to her and asked her if it was alright for her to return to the planet. Though there was much more the two sisters wished to say to one another, their time was short. Shalua eventually died when the Shera was shot down by Deepground during the assault on Midgar, and the machine keeping her body alive destroyed.
