A pilot from Rocket Town with a habit of cursing, Cid had always dreamed of going into space. After the initial launch of the rocket for which his town was named failed, Shinra cut the funding to the space program, and Cid's dreams were dashed. He blamed his assistant, Shera, for the failure, as the launch had to be aborted because she had remained behind in the engine room for an emergency repair.
When Rufus Shinra, newly appointed president of the Shinra Company, came to visit Rocket Town, Cid hoped that he had come to announce that the space program would be receiving funding again. It was not to be, however, and Cid's dreams were crushed a second time when he learned that Rufus was only interested in commandering his airplane, the Tiny Bronco.
Rather than let Rufus take Cid's prized plane, Shera directed Cloud and the others to get to it first. After a brief struggle with Palmer, one of Shinra's executives, Cloud took control of the plane. Shortly thereafter, they were joined by Cid, who took over as pilot. Though they managed to get the plane airborne, Shinra was not about to let them get away so easily, and proceeded to shoot them down. The Tiny Bronco crash-landed some distance away, in the ocean. Crippled and unable to fly, the small sea-plane was none-the-less still able to taxi across the surface of the ocean, providing the group with much needed transportation.
With his plane badly damaged, and his dreams of space travel all but gone, Cid decided to join Cloud in the fight against Shinra and Sephiroth. Later, he would save them all from Shinra's clutches, and at the same time, reclaim a lost treasure of his... the airship Highwind.
