The son of Seto of Cosmo Canyon, Nanaki for years believed that his father betrayed the people of the canyon to the Gi tribe when they invaded. Ashamed of his father for fleeing, and leaving his mother to die, Nanaki harbored great animosity toward him. Believed to be the last of his species, Nanaki was captured by Hojo, a Shinra scientist specializing in genetic research. He was given the designation Red XIII, and imprisioned in the Shinra Company's headquarters in Midgar.
His situation changed, however, when Hojo attempted to breed him with the recently recaptured Aeris Gainsborough. Hojo believed that, because of Nanaki's species' long life span, the offpring of the two would be more suitable for long-term research. Hojo's plans were foiled when Cloud Strife and the members of Avalanche arrived to rescue Aeris. Nanaki joined with them in order to escape, and this alliance resulted in him becoming a permanent addition to the team.
Some time later, the group travelled to Cosmo Canyon, where they met Bugenhagen, Nanaki's adopted grandfather, who revealed that, though Nanaki was an adult by human standards, in terms of his own species he was a mere teenager... much to Nanaki's embarassment. More seriously, however, Bugenhagen revealed the truth about Nanaki's father.
Seto was, in fact a great hero. The caves beneath the town would have provided the invading Gi tribe with the perfect way by which to overwelm Cosmo Canyon... but Seto alone stood guard at the entrance to the cave, and did not let them reach the town. The spears used by the Gi tribe turned his body to stone, and Seto still stood, frozen in time, upon a cliff overlooking the cave entrance.
Upon learning the truth, Nanaki vowed to make his father proud, and joined Cloud, Barret, and Tifa in their quest to stop Sephiroth.
