Sephiroth was born to a woman named Lucrecia as part of an experiment known as the Jenova Project. As an adult, he was an elite Soldier 1st Class in Shinra's military, surpassing the ordinary soldiers in skill and strength.
While on a mission in the town of Nibelheim, Sephiroth came upon the files relating to the experiments performed him as part of the Jenova project. Learning the truth of his conception and birth, he lost all control, burning the town to the ground in his rage. He then travelled to the Mako reactor situated on the mountain above the town, where Shinra had stored the remains of the Jenova specimen. Reguarding it as his "mother" he removed the head from the remains and took it with him.
Tifa Lockhart, a local resident who had been hired as their guide in the mountains, went after Sephiroth, and upon discovering that he had killed her father, attacked him in a blind rage. He tossed her aside effortlessly, and left her there, injured. A young Soldier 1st Class named Zack, one of the men who'd accompanied him on the mission, also confronted Sephiroth as he was leaving the reactor, but was no match for him.
Cloud Strife was the third to challenge him, and though he was perhaps unlikely to defeat him, he somehow found the strength to drive him into the pool of liquid Mako far below at the bottom of the reactor. Tifa was rescued by her teacher Zangan, but Cloud and Zack were captured and taken by Shinra for experimentation.
Sephiroth was believed to be dead for the five intervening years, and Shinra rebuilt the town and hired people to replace the townsfolk, effectively covering up what had happened. When Sephiroth suddenly returned, his rage had not faded. He travelled to Midgar to reclaim the remains of Jenova, killing the president in the process and paving the way for Rufus Shinra to take control of the company. His "mother" no longer in Shinra's possession, he then set out to obtain the legendary Black Materia that he might use it to become one with the planet and wipe out humanity altogether.
