Narcissistic and egotistical, Kuja is a Genome created by Garland, the leader of the doomed world, Terra. His purpose is to speed the destruction of life on Gaia so that the souls of Terra may colonize the world. The physical vessels for their souls, the Genomes, are immortal creatures... nothing more than empty shells. Once the inhabitants of Gaia are gone, they are meant to colonize the Gaia, be given a Terran soul, and become mortal.
Kuja is different from other Genomes in that he already has possession of a soul. When he learned that not only was he doomed to a mortal life, but that Garland has also already begun work on his replacement, Zidane Tribal, Kuja stole the infant Genome and abandoned him on Gaia.
Granted his freedom on the condition that he speed the destruction of Gaia's inhabitants, Kuja manipulated and plotted, eventually plunging the world into war. Finding an easily controlled puppet in the form of Queen Brahne of Alexandria, Kuja supplied her with an army of black mages to do her bidding and invade the neighboring kingdoms. The result was death and destruction on a scale the world had never seen before.
