Everquest II, City of Heroes and Age of Conan have adopted this idea, now it seems Square Enix are to follow in their footsteps.
They are going to introduce a system to Final Fantasy XI, whereby characters of varying degrees of levels will be able to play together.
Named Level Sync, it allows the party to 'power down' to the level of a designated player. (Stat bonuses from equipment will also be affected by this and be scaled down too)

A few days back, news broke of a guild in a titanic battle with a Notorious Monster in Final Fantasy XI- Pandemonium Warden.
Even after slugging it out for 18 hours (thats not a typo), the guild admitted defeat and were unable to beat it- due to their own well-being.

Square Enix sure do like to create events for you dedicated fans of their online game Final Fantasy XI.
On May 16th, to celebrate the 6th anniversary of the game, there will be a Moogle event sponsored by the Mog House Management Union which will give players the ability to win lots of gil and obtain rare items for a small price.
